Origin of the Epithet “Marvelous City” to designate the City of Rio de Janeiro

In the first part of the article, I dispel the widespread myth that the writer Coelho Neto created the epithet “Cidade Maravilhosa” (Marvellous City) to designate the city of Rio de Janeiro. In the second part, I try to unravel the real origin of the epithet by showing that it was first used to designate the National Exhibition of 1908, and later the “New Rio” resulting from the urban reforms carried out of Pereira Passos, until it finally became popular in the carnival song Cidade Maravilhosa.
