Abstract

The paper is a contribution to Brazilian and Amazonian historiography in the 1930s. It is based on the analysis of a number of theses presented by Amazonian historians at the Third Congress of National History held by the Brazilian Historical and Geographic Institute in 1938. The main sources used in the text were the Annals of the Congress. In addition, we also consulted magazine editions published by the historical institutes of Pará and Amazonas. A reading of the documents and the bibliographic reference makes it possible to understand that the theses of the Amazonian historians presented at the congress reveal that they treat regional history themes in direct dialogue with the history of the Brazilian nation. The theses had, therefore, the double aim of serving to introduce the Amazon and its historians to the intellectual network around the IHGB, and also of enabling the historians to be part of a broader picture in terms of the development of a national state, a task that had long been a goal of the IHGB itself.
