The article aims to analyze the process of independence in Rio de Janeiro, focusing on the role that both the military forces, or first-line troops (closer to what the army is today), and the militias played in the events. We argue that, even in an improvised manner, there wasn't an army at the time, whether revolutionary or not, fighting against colonial rule. The use of expressions like "armed forces," "army," and "military" leads us to an anachronistic interpretation of the events. Examining the episodes that took place on the streets of Rio de Janeiro between 1821 and 1822, what we find behind these significant collective subjects are not only numerous fights and conflicts but also a broad engagement of men from different social groups. They saw in the political rise of Prince Dom Pedro an opportunity to change their destinies.
