Abstract

The purpose of this text is to analyze the main ideas in the debates for and against the maintenance of slavery in newspapers in the provinces of Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso. The time frame refers to the arrival of the press in these two provinces, which occurred on different dates, until the last quarter of the 19th century - since, in Brazil, the 1870s and 1880s raised a debate about slavery and the themes linked to the emergence of abolition. The discussion about slavery and abolition in the journals of the two provinces shows how much slavery was intertwined in Brazilian society and in different regions with different dynamics.
