The paper is an essay on the historiographical work of Joaquim Veríssimo Serrão focused on Luso-Brazilian history. We analyze his contributions to understanding not only the economic, political and strategic relevance of the foundation of Rio de Janeiro, but also the situation Brazil was in in the Iberian Union. In his works, he highlighted the idea of “another Portugal” and the “Atlantic thesis”, according to which Brazil was no longer just an extension of Portugal but part of an Atlantic axis in full geographical and economic expansion.
