"Religious teaching in the face of free thought", by the young Sérgio Buarque de Holanda

The paper consists of a full transcription of an unpublished document written by the young Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, preceded by a brief comment. It was published almost 90 years ago in the inaugural edition of the Hierarchia magazine in August 1931, due to the promulgation of the Decree no.19.941/1931 by the Provisional Government (1930-1934), resulting from a Catholic ecclesiastical elite’s political articulation in the First Brazilian Republic (1889-1930). This Decree regulated religious teaching in the elementary, secondary and higher courses. Not only the document in its entirety but also a large part of the references mentioned here come to light for the first time.
