Abstract

The paper aims to transcribe and analyse a request to open a private school in Salvador, Bahia, in 1810. Our main goal is to highlight the importance of primary written sources as a way of studying the history of education in colonial Brazil. The request is analysed in the context of three key turning points in the history of the Portuguese-Brazilian Empire, namely the Pombaline reforms, the Napoleonic wars, and the move of the Portuguese royal family to Brazil. Against this background, the document offers an array of elements to understand better how these events shaped the cultural and educational landscape in Portuguese America. Several issues addressed in the document leave room for future researches, such as the enlightened reformism, the role of discipline and body regulation in shaping national identity, food history and education as a form of social hierarchy. Additionally, it offers a glimpse into the life of Luís dos Santos Vilhena, one of the most renowned characters in the history of Brazil.
