COLETAR E CONHECER NA ESPANHA E SEU IMPÉRIO

Historiadores que pesquisaram o Império espanhol várias vezes o descreveram como uma formação política que se manteve unida por cadeias de papéis. Enquanto os portugueses controlavam rotas marítimas, os ingleses tomavam posse de terras e os franceses faziam comércio com nativos, o que os espanhóis faziam melhor, segundo narrativas como essas, era desenvolver uma administração forte e eficiente. Esse quadro, embora apresentando a Espanha como um caso altamente excepcional, era também baseado na observação de grandes desenvolvimentos trazidos pela emergência e consolidação dos Estados europeus. Neste texto, eu coloco em questão as premissas desse argumento e pergunto se as impressionantes coleções de documentos que foram reunidas durante a época moderna realmente serviram para melhorar a governança da forma que essas narrativas supõem. No caso espanhol, nós temos evidências suficientes de que petições escritas enviadas a diferentes autoridades imperiais eram discutidas. Nós também temos algumas evidências de que a escrita da história às vezes dependia da documentação de arquivos. Mas nós ainda não temos provas suficientes de que documentos eram sistematicamente consultados, que consultá-los era um pré-requisito para a tomada de decisões ou que a informação acumulada nos arquivos levava a um conhecimento melhorado dos territórios e seus povos.
