Abstract

The Republican Revolution of 1817 in Pernambuco and its adjacent captaincies in the Northeast drew the attention of the French writers Chateaubriand and Stendhal, and of Richard Rush, who served as President James Madison´s Secretary of State. Even Napoleon became interested in Latin America.
