Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to demonstrate the possibilities for historical research on food in Brazil, based especially on the still little studied idea of abundance and on some myths found in European Medieval fables such as the one about the country of Cocagne. To this end, we conducted a bibliographic review of works over a long period related to the theme of food and abundance. We present a brief comparative study between Brazil and the United States, the latter of which having a strong tradition in the research on affluence, including food affluence. Specifically, we focused on the idea of abundance in the Northeast, as opposed to the image of misery and hunger prevailing in this region over decades, with the aim of confronting stereotypes and paving ways for future studies.
