Santa Catarina at the Brazilian History Exhibition of 1881

In the paper, we seek to understand the values attributed to the Cultural Heritage of Santa Catarina by analysing the documents sent by the Province for the Brazilian History Exhibition in Rio de Janeiro in 1881. The documents were collected from digital libraries such as the Biblioteca Nacional and Biblioteca do Senado and analysed based mainly on data collected by Lilia Moritz Schwarcz (1998), Alois Riegl (2014) and Janice Gonçalves (2016). We conclude that the values attributed both by the empire and by the Province of Santa Catarina to the cultural heritage aimed at showing the organization and development of the country, thus contributing to the discourse on the progress and greatness of the Empire.
