Abstract

The paper aims to investigate the staging of the drama São Bernardo by the poet Cláudio Manuel da Costa at the Opera House of Vila Rica in 1770, during the opening season of the theater. We first analyse aspects such as the construction of the theater itself, its main agents as well as historical episodes in the state of Minas Gerais in the second half of the 18th century. Secondly, we seek to recreate the imaginaries in tension at the time involving the expulsion of the Jesuits from Portuguese America in 1759, and the figure of Manoel da Cruz, bishop of Mariana. Since the theater text cannot be traced, we attempt to retrace the connections between the author and the newly constructed theater, his motivation for writing the drama, linking it to other dramatic works, and to the existence of texts with religious content in the 18th century theater.
